Holidays
The firm's holiday calendar, entered as data by an administrator rather than assumed by the software.
Public holidays are not a property of software. Staff and firms span jurisdictions, so holidays are rows an administrator maintains rather than rules compiled into the product, and each one can be scoped to the whole firm or to the countries it actually applies in.
Dates can be fixed or pinned to a year, which is what moveable feasts and one-off declared holidays require.
The genuinely useful part is the interaction with leave: if a holiday lands inside somebody's approved leave, the day comes back to their balance automatically, and the refund is recorded so it can be explained and cannot be applied twice.
The calendar
- Name, day and month, with an optional year for dates that move
- Scope set to the whole firm or to a list of countries
- Who created the entry, and when
- A default list provisioned when a firm is created, and a script to backfill firms that predate the feature
Effect on leave
- Days refunded to the leave balance when a holiday falls inside an approved request
- Each refund recorded against the holiday, the request and the specific date
- One refund per day per request, enforced by the data model rather than by care
